Slobs, Parasites and Spongers

‘History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes’, said Mark Twain.

I couldn’t help but be slightly amused to see the front cover of a recent edition of The Spectator, an establishment British magazine edited and written by older, disapproving right-wing hacks. Its caricature of British wasted youth as ‘Slobs’ reminded me of the Soviet satirical magazine Krokodil’s frequent pokes at ‘spongers’, ’parasites’ and ’hooligans’.

It’s interesting, if awful, to see how both sides of the political spectrum demonise their youth.
